Are you having difficulty obtaining the help and services that you need?
"PTSD is a real illness that needs to be treated," says the National Institute of Mental Health. Many people who have been through a shocking or frightening experience are still traumatized years later. The NIH says, "It's not your fault and you don't have to suffer. You can feel better and get your life back!"
PTSD can come on immediately or it may not show up for 3, 5 or 10 years, possibly when a similar event occurs. Some memories are more vivid than others.
War, disaster and crisis are often seen as short lived events, but in reality they are long term, inflicting significant impact on individuals and communities. When all the helpers leave, individuals, families and communities are often left to motivate and energize themselves to accomplish major projects when most are still tired and traumatized. Service members return from war to an unfamiliar household and very different days.
Of all the immediate and long lasting effects war and disaster impose upon those involved, PTSD is the most common condition that holds on and holds back rebuilding and rehabilitation. There is an urgent need to use effective strategies to help those who live through war and disaster. Returning soldiers, disaster victims and emergency service workers, such as Fire, Police, Dr's, Nurses, EMT's and Red Cross deserve a continued commitment. Traumatic events change lives. It can be a well managed effective change handled with compassion. Victims and emergency services personnel function better immediately and in the long run when they have effective debriefing and help with grief and anxiety ASAP.
When people hurt, entire community social and economic development suffer. The price of immediate trauma relief and mental health education is not too expensive if we take a closer look at the cost of unattended grief, PTSD and its enormous effect on victims, families and communities.
War and disaster have a big effect on individuals.
Most people are in need of mental health relief after experiencing war or disaster.
Triage and treatment must take place as soon as possible.
